Throughout her career, Lady Gaga has proudly proclaimed her love for her hometown of New York City. Little Monsters know that Gaga's whole Monster Ball Tour was an homage to the great underground parties of her beloved city. In the MTV documentary "Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside," the pop superstar goes into more detail about her connection to New York and how it has not only shaped her music, but also her sense of style.
"This is how I get home. My leather jacket is like my Dorothy slippers," she explained, referencing the magical ruby-red slippers worn by the leading lady in "The Wizard of Oz." "That's why I changed when we sat down. You said, 'I want to ask you about New York.' I said, 'You'd better get my leather.' "
The strong sense of home also appears on her latest pop opus, Born This Way, especially on the track "Marry the Night," a swirling anthem about living it up in her hometown and how greatness can be found around every street corner. "I wrote so many songs on this new album about New York. I mean, every song on all my albums has some relationship to New York City, but one in particular, 'Marry the Night,' " she says during the special, airing Thursday at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. "That record was about my husband, New York."
Even before cameras started rolling, Gaga paid homage to the city she calls home. Davi Russo, who directed the documentary and interviewed Gaga for the special, recalled the moment that Gaga shared the significance of that leather jacket.
"I just remember kneeling down next to her ... and I said, 'I want to talk to you about New York. I want to take you back.' And she looked at me, I remember, and she said, 'I need to change.' ... Fifteen minutes later, she comes out in this amazing leather jacket, just total New York City punk rock. I just saw that person transform."
